17 Years Ago Today: The announcement of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

As highlighted on LeonardMatlovich.com: Seventeen years ago, President Bill Clinton announced the proposed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) law to the American public.  After months of heated debate in Congress and statements from Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Colin Powell against open service, Clinton endorsed DADT as a compromise of his campaign promise to allow open service.  This announcement came the same month that RAND released their study concluding there was no empirical justification for preventing gays and lesbians from serving in the military.  This announcement led to the law being signed by the President on November 30, 1993.

Americablog.com posted an ABC World News report from that night, detailing the decision.
