College Dems, ABA Speak Out for Repeal

This week the College Democrats of America joined a growing nationwide coalition of advocates who are coming out for repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT). Andrew Rabenstein and Ben Price, Chairs of the College Democrats of America’s LGBT & Veterans Caucus, had this to say in Huffington Post:

“Discharging over 13,000 soldiers because of their sexuality is in violation of the principles of this nation, as is forcing thousands of other service members to keep their sexuality secret. In the interests of human rights and furthering the most capable military in the world the College Democrats of America will continue to support President Obama's agenda for an end to ‘Don't Ask Don't Tell.’”

This move reflects the trend we’ve seen among younger generations of service members who largely don’t care if their comrades are lesbian or gay. Sexual orientation has nothing to do with completing the mission, and the future leaders of our military know it.

The American Bar Association also came down on the side of repeal last week:

"We opposed enactment of this policy in 1993 as establishing a form of discrimination that was not based on the character of the servicemember's contribution to the national defense," ABA President Carolyn Lamm wrote. "The harm we foresaw has since come to pass. More than 13,000 men and women have been dismissed from service under the law, among them highly trained specialists like pilots, sharpshooters and translators."

Support for DADT is dwindling with each passing day. Whether young or old, conservative or liberal, gay or straight, Americans overwhelmingly want DADT to go. Now we just have to get our elected officials in Washington to listen and repeal it this year.
