DADT Panel Makes Waves at Lavender Law Conference in Miami Beach

The SLDN legal team traveled to the National LGBT Bar Association’s 2010 Annual Lavender Law Career Fair and Conference in Miami Beach this past weekend, where we participated in a panel SLDN's Aaron Tax at Lavender Law Conference 2010entitled “‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and the Transition to Repeal,” recruited new law school interns, and attended a wide array of sessions on cutting-edge LGBT legal issues. We also had the opportunity to meet with our colleagues at other LGBT organizations and make the connections that are so important in our day-to-day work on behalf of LGBT service members.

The focus of this year’s DADT panel was much more forward-looking than in years past. We discussed the Pentagon Working Group, the New Instructions and the impact they’ve had on the lives of service members, the Log Cabin and Witt litigation, the case of Lt. Col. Victor Fehrenbach, and how private practitioners can help in the cause.

During the panel a law student shared his experience of serving in the Israeli military – touching on a point that we often try to make: It’s time for the Senate to catch up with our allies and vote for repeal.

Wow!!! I attended the Lavender Law Conference in Portland, OR back in 1994, SIXTEEN years ago. I attended a panel discussion on the brand new “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” law, then only a few months old. SLDN was also new having been born out of the ad hoc Campaign for Military Service. I believe that the co-directors of SLDN Dixon Osborn and Michelle Beneke were there. Also on the panel was that attorney representing Navy Petty Officer Keith Mienhold. It would have been very interesting to have seen how far things have gone since then and of course how far we still need to go.
