I am working with a Army Reserve unit career counselor who is a SFC. He told me yesterday that the instructions he has received is to process all prior service under DADT as he would any other prior service trying to enlist. He said that we can do all of the recruiter paperwork and packets. The only thing I can’t do right now is the MEPS physical, sign a contract, or take the oath. He said it is not the DADT discharge or the JRB code, it is the RE code 4. RE-4 is non-waiverable all services. He said the JRB code which triggers the RE-4 (bar to re-enlist) is done away with under the repeal because code JRB is under Chap. 15-3 DADT. So he said that the chain of command will have to come up with some sort of waiver for the RE-4 bar to re-enlist code. So in March we sit down and go over my line scores and see what jobs are available for my MOS or what I qualify for. He is going to process me like normal as far as he can. He is different than a Recruiter because he is the unit retention NCO and knows the direct needs of his units whereas the recruiter sends you to MEPS and thats it, they tell you what is available and wherever they want you. The way I am going, I get to be in the Unit I want because he will slot me where needed, I get options. I suggest all prior service to find a retention NCO and work with him/her. They are more on the inside track of things and you get more face time than you would with a regular recruiter.
