Elizabeth Shirey: Departing SLDN

Elizabeth ShireyToday is a bittersweet Friday for me – my last day at SLDN! I can’t believe that over a year has flown by since I joined this amazing team. SLDN was and still is my dream job, as I get to work every day with dedicated advocates; talk with LGBT service members, veterans, and allies like you; and contribute to an issue I care so deeply about.

Though I will be sad to leave SLDN today, I am looking forward to beginning law school at UCLA in August - concurrently with the Air Force ROTC program - with the intention of commissioning as a JAG officer. I am thrilled to take another step forward toward becoming part of the first generation who will be able to serve openly in the military.

YOU have helped make this possibility a reality! From calling and meeting with your senators to spreading the word about repeal through your own social networks, you jumped into this battle whole-heartedly. I have been honored to fight alongside you.

It is a great comfort to me in taking this next step to know that SLDN will continue to be here advocating for LGBT service members. Thank you for helping sustain SLDN over the long term, and for refusing to give up the fight for equality. We have so many battles left to wage – let’s take this hill together.

Elizabeth— thanks for all your great work with your great team at SLDN.  As a JAG officer you will continue to support the cause.  Have fun in LA.
