Ensuring Respect for All Patriots on World AIDS Day

On this World AIDS Day, SLDN recognizes the countless, patriotic HIV+ service members who are at work today and every day keeping us safe.

The reality is that our military continues to discriminate against those who are HIV+. The military bars commissioning and enlistment by those who are HIV+. And while those who are on active duty, and otherwise healthy, may continue serving, their career progression may be hindered by their non-deployability. Those who are in the guard and reserve will likely be discharged, unless they are able to find a non-deployable billet.

Furthermore, while HIV status should not trigger a “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” investigation, an HIV diagnosis may lead to assumptions that could in turn cause the service member in question to be impacted by the law.

SLDN continues to provide free, confidential legal advice to all service members who are HIV+, regardless of sexual orientation. If you are HIV+, in the military, and you have questions, we encourage you to call our legal hotline to make an appointment to speak with an attorney.
