Gaga Goes for Repeal
During her first one-on-one with Larry King earlier this week, Lady Gaga expressed her hope that “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” would be repealed. Click here to watch: http://bit.ly/c3K4Ne
Although the pop sensation’s support for open service might come as no surprise, it shows that an overwhelming majority of young people – and Americans of all political stripes – understand it’s time to let gays and lesbians serve without the burden of DADT discrimination. According to the latest CNN Poll last week, almost eight in 10 Americans favor repeal: http://bit.ly/cHsbXt
And Washington is finally starting to listen to the people who elected them. On May 27, the full floor of the House voted (224-194), along with the Senate Armed Services Committee (16-12) to add repeal language to the annual Defense Authorization Budget bill.
While these positive first steps are welcome, DADT is still the law. Service members can still be fired on the basis of sexual orientation. Until we have full repeal, our gay and lesbian men and women in uniform need to know that the risks of serving under DADT are the same now as they were before last week’s vote.
