Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga brings the fight to the Senate! Join our fight.

The House has spoken - again! In a historic vote on December 15th, by a margin of 250-175, the House of Representatives passed a new standalone bill (H.R. 2965) that would repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Now the ball is in the Senate’s court.

We call upon the Senate to remain in session and in Washington until they pass the House bill to repeal "Don’t Ask, Don't Tell." Show your rage for repeal and insist the Senate stay in Washington until they have finished the job.

Call both your senators at the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121.

Here's a sample script for your call:

"Hello, my name is ______ and I’m a constituent from __________ (city, state).

I'm calling to tell Senator _______ to stand with Majority Leader Reid, Chairman Levin, and Senator Lieberman and vote for the House bill to repeal 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.' Fight back against Senators John McCain and Mitch McConnell's obstructionism and pass repeal this year.

Thank you.”

Call the Capitol switchboard today!

(202) 224-3121

These senators particularly need to hear from you. Please call them today!

--John Ensign (R-NV);
--George LeMieux (R-FL);
--Richard Lugar (R-IN);
--Judd Gregg (R-NH);
--George Voinovich (R-OH);
--Kit Bond (R-MO);
--Mark Kirk (R-IL);
--Kent Conrad (D-ND);
--Joe Manchin (D-WV).

Thank you. Together we will make it to the finish line for repeal!

Just a reminder,  as gay people we have no right to impose our lifestyle on others. Let’s have respect for those who do not have the same lustful desires as us by not forcing them to adhere to or comply with our standard of living. If we are going to preach tolerance it should come from both sides guys…

there is no way I would put my rank nor my Active duty status on this site.  What are you thinking??  Do you think or do you even care or is this your way of coming out??  There is a place for you to state your feeling on this and it is Anonymous thru you portal.  You would think being an Officer your post are seen and can be tracked.  I will add your post to my list along with the VMA pic to the JA tomorrow. Should be interesting.

Did my part, and it almost killed my battery. I like to see Lady Gaga being so engaged and involved with her fans and for gay rights. Its refreshing to see someone actually give a damn now in days.

This will definitely be a very big moment history and it shows that Lady Gaga can make just about anything happen if she really pushes for it. I’ll continue to support LGBT rights in any way I can :D

Thanks Lady GAGA with your voice and assistance we can lift this disgusting ban and hopefully also receive benefits for same-sex partners.  It is not enough to just lift the ban we need to have relationships acknowledged and the best way to do this is to allow partners of same-sex couples the same, exact same benefits that hetro Soldiers receive.  Again, thank you for the support on this issue.  CW4 Deborah Butrim, Active Duty Army 18 1/2 years: )!!

Allen in Orlando, FL on September 13, 2010 at 07.52 pm

Michael - You are right! But the problem we have as a Nation and the people in it is that we allow religion conflict with what is right. Religion has a huge factor in this card game. No Religion against us is gonna freely fold to the gay population or to the policy’s repeal. If Obama really wanted to he could have already signed the bill and passed the repeal of the policy. Its a head game. Just like in 1940 thu 1950’s Integration of black service members, the current president signed it into effect. Time will tell with this repeal, till then we can only fight for what is right as people.

Michael on September 13, 2010 at 07.37 pm

@Allen
The military basically staged a mutiny when the outright ban was supposed to be removed. Yes, there was political backlash too, but if the military leadership hadn’t been so violently against repeal back then, DADT probably wouldn’t have happened. Unfortunately, politicians always give great deference to the military, so they go their wish. And despite some positive comments by Mullen and Patreaus there are still a great many senior generals who would rather have things stay as they are.

Let alone the fact that it was up to them how to implement DADT and they chose the most draconian one. Let’s remember that it is only until recently that discussions with chaplains and counselors are confidential for example. They could and should have done that right from the start.

Steve - the Military has high respect for its service Members, and is the best Military Force in the world. The military branches have to follow what the GOVERNMENT deems as appropriate. So please don’t assume cause the DADT Policy kicks able body people out that the military is the blame. That’s half the issue.

Ashley - The policy was formed as a scapegoat to legal issues forming AGAINST the Military/Government. It at the time was thought to be the right move but as years have came to pass it has shown its WRONG. Please don’t assume to know what your saying when you say “the military has the “don’t ask don’t tell” policy for a reason. “. You really don’t have a leg to stand on in the issue. BTW i hope your spouse is safe, I know its hard to have him away at times.

ashley in US on September 13, 2010 at 07.12 pm

i would rather the issue of “don’t ask don’t tell” continue to stay in tact.  i am married to a solider and i know that if it is taken away it will cause controversy between the soldiers.  and them wearing the military uniforms for personal agenda is not appropriate they were not wearing it to represent the US military just for their own personal gain.. the military has the “don’t ask don’t tell” policy for a reason.

Here Steve, tell me where these certain cirmumstances are?? I don’t see it anywhere, that they were representing the military and you do not wear the uniform for any protes period. I don’t care what the protest is.

I will post it for you to read.
Section 772 lists some exceptions:

(a) A member of the Army National Guard or the Air National Guard may wear the uniform prescribed for the Army National Guard or the Air National Guard, as the case may be.

(b) A member of the Naval Militia may wear the uniform prescribed for the Naval Militia.

(c) A retired officer of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps may bear the title and wear the uniform of his retired grade.

(d) A person who is discharged honorably or under honorable conditions from the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps may wear his uniform while going from the place of discharge to his home, within three months after his discharge.

(e) A person not on active duty who served honorably in time of war in the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps may bear the title, and, when authorized by regulations prescribed by the President, wear the uniform, of the highest grade held by him during that war.

(f) While portraying a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps, an actor in a theatrical or motion-picture production may wear the uniform of that armed force if the portrayal does not tend to discredit that armed force.

(g) An officer or resident of a veterans’ home administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs may wear such uniform as the Secretary of the military department concerned may prescribe.

(h) While attending a course of military instruction conducted by the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps, a civilian may wear the uniform prescribed by that armed force if the wear of such uniform is specifically authorized under regulations prescribed by the Secretary of the military department concerned.

(i) Under such regulations as the Secretary of the Air Force may prescribe, a citizen of a foreign country who graduates from an Air Force school may wear the appropriate aviation badges of the Air Force.

(j) A person in any of the following categories may wear the uniform prescribed for that category:

•(1) Members of the Boy Scouts of America.

•(2) Members of any other organization designated by the Secretary of a military department

Steve on September 13, 2010 at 07.04 pm

The military brings shame and dishonor upon itself for having a policy such as DADT. How can it possibly be shamed any further?
They were discharged honorably and can wear the uniform under certain circumstances. Yes, here it’s a form of protest, but it’s done respectfully and classy. You may have a point if you complained about Dan Choi chaining himself to the White House. But not this.

Love is Love that’s why I Support Lady Gaga!!!!!

Judy on September 13, 2010 at 06.49 pm

Like I said, it has nothing to do with being gay, it has to do with why they wore it to the VMA’s.  What service member hasn’t been thru hell?  It was worn for a personnel agenda, not to represent the US Military and that is where my problem is.  I have gay friends however I know they would never pull a stunt like that. It was wrong, at least they stayed in regulation with in dress and appearance…I will give them that. There is a time and place for everything and this was not the time nor the place.

Allen in Orlando, FL on September 13, 2010 at 06.44 pm

If being gay brought shame to this country then I am guilty.

Allen in Orlando, FL on September 13, 2010 at 06.42 pm

I WOULD NEVER WEAR IT TO INCITE A RIOT, ANY KIND OF RALLY, AND/OR NON MILITARY OR GOVERNMENT FUNCTION.  My claim is to the the comment and Regulations being brought up about NOT WEARING IT period… I sorry I dont give two shits what it is telling you. If i wanna wear it to feel the pride or show respect i will. I have earned that. I went through hell for a country that cant even recognize my sexual beliefs, and still i stood with my brothers and sisters and fought for the country i so love.  I am American Soldier and no man or woman can/will take that from me.

Judy on September 13, 2010 at 06.31 pm

It has nothing to do with being gay, it has to do with serving our nation and following the rules put forth…you need to read and educate yourself before you start your rant something I am sure you have not done…I do not respect anyone who has brought shame upon the military..I have given 20 years of my life serving, I have never, ever put the military in a bad light.  Individuals give up that right when they bring shame upon the military.  Do you think it would be ok to wear it to a politcal rally???

Mason King in Washington D.C. on September 13, 2010 at 06.31 pm

Gaga, as much as I think you are well intended, you fail to overlook the impact your actions have on American Forces in the Middle East.  As we speak there are enemy commanders showing their troops videos of us burning the Qu’ran.  And they are telling them we are a homosexual invader army.  We don’t have anything to defend with over there,  and there are so many problems with us defending our unprotected troops, and or landing reinforcements, lacking any military bases to do so.  Iran has talked about invading Israel for 10 years actively and has become silent.  They could take Iraq at any time and then be on Israels doorstep in a week.  Maybe you can write a song about it.

Sorry I missed your show.
Look me up.

Susan Wald on September 13, 2010 at 06.23 pm

Your outfits are a hoot - you are quite a master at sowmanship. This is a great cause to bring to the public spotlight. It’s about time more people were aware of this grave injustice against members of the GLBT community, and did something about it.

Judy on September 13, 2010 at 06.12 pm

You do not wear your mililtary uniform to public appearances for your own personnel agenda, one if you are no longer in the military, second if you have been discharged, NOT RETIRED, you do not wear the uniform…I don’t care who you are or what you are standing for. Some of us take pride wearing this uniform and we have never been in trouble nor brought discredit upon our military branches…This has nothing to do with being gay it is about respect and these four do not have respect for our services!!! All so here is the US Code covering this. http://uscode.house.gov/download/pls/10C45.txt

Jared in Delaware on September 13, 2010 at 06.04 pm

I called my elected officials and have been rabble-rousing them to repeal DADT, but I didn’t do it to answer “your call to action”.

Frankly, I think your music is dreadful and that you’re somewhat of a hack. Your outfits are simply laughable and are the farthest thing possible from a fashion statement.

Comparisons made between you and David Bowie or Madonna are completely incorrect and serve as an insult to each of them, as they are both true performers whose music has intrinsic worth, style, value and meaning.

Perhaps a little less of the hackneyed fashion…and a little more substance in your music….and I’ll re-evaluate my feelings.

In any case, I suppose we are on the same team here, as we both want the repeal of DADT.

Thank you Lady Gaga for supporting the gay community. That was a big step talking about it on the VMAs. I will honestly say openly that I’m a lesbian and I’d love to go into the military and serve our country but I wouldn’t want to be discharged. I wish we could all be free and have the same opportunities. Everyone is human weather they are gay, lesbian, bisexual, trangender, or even straight. So why can’t people that qualify for the military just be free to be them straight or not straight. Homosexuals want to serve the country just as much as heterosexuals. I stand up for what I believe in everyday and homosexualality is obviously a big part of my life because its who I am. I just want the same rights as everyone else in the world. Lets get rid of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy and just be who we are and not have to hind.

DADT needs to be repealed. These ladies and gentlemen are putting their lives on the line for all of us regardless of who we are, who we love, what color our skin is, or what religion we practice. They support Americans, as Americans. The men and women of the armed forces deserve more than anyone to live their lives openly and without fear of loosing their current jobs or ruining their careers. As a service members spouse I can say that we, and many of our military friends, are more than eager to see this horrible ban be lifted.

I back Lady Gaga 150% for her voice in this discriminative matter. Your gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnic background, religion shouldn’t matter if you’re willing to serve and protect our country.how can we be called the United states of America if UNITY doesn’t exist. The average person is blind to the fact and the majority discriminate against US, because WE are different. WE all are GOD’S creations and shouldn’t have to hide who we ALL are.WE are ALL HUMAN BEINGS and under God’s eyes,WE ARE ALL HIS CHILDREN. UNITY is a very strong message to get off the ground,But if the millitary,people who protect the us,are using discrimination to feel better, how are we suppose to be unified. Bottom line WE ARE ALL GOD’S CREATION’S AS HUMANS, AND SHOULDN’T BE JUDGED OR PUT IN ANY GROUP OR SEGREGATED AGAINST BECAUSE WE ARE DIFFERENT. ..WE WILL STAND PROUD,WE WILL OVERCOME,WE WILL BE EQUAL-ADAM C KLUG

I left a message for Sen McCain urging him to reconsider his position or end up on the wrong side of the Constitution and on the wrong side of history.  DADT proves that there is no “down side” for straights in the military, but gays shouldn’t have to lie to serve and live in silence and celibacy.

As a gay veteran who served openly over 30 years ago, and without incident or repercussions, I know the majority of service members look at the overall contributions and character of an individual, and not the unique biological make up of the soldiers with which they serve.  And regardless of the circumstances I also felt it was important to me, as a being, that I serve my nation.

“Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” was, by far, the worst idea to come from the Clinton administration; it deserves to be repealed due to its homophobic nature.  Anyone who is dumb enough or desperate enough to join the military should be allowed to join regardless of sexual orientation.

Geoff Pfaff on September 13, 2010 at 11.30 am

Thank you Lady GAGA I am pleased to call and have. I am so glad you are helping the GLTB community, MY community, we love you!

Jae in Washington D.C. on September 13, 2010 at 11.30 am

Lady Gaga, You are an inspiration to the all the servicemembers who are affected by the DADT, When I seen the servicemembers you were with on the VMAs brought tears and joy knowing you were backing US up on this issue, its been a long year since I was discharged under this policy..KEEP THE FAITH and LETS FIGHT THIS CAUSE

James in Portland, OR on September 13, 2010 at 11.29 am

It is important that DADT is before the Senate prior to the elections. I hope the switchboard is lite up today and continues until DADT is repealed.
Here in Oregon we have been encouraging everyone to call the Semators and the Senate leadership to bring this to a vote before they recess for the election.
Follow Veterans For Human Rights http://www.vfhr.org or on facebook after DADT is repealed for outreach services for the Active, Reserve and Veterans in our armed forces to help with any problems.

Thanks to Lady Gaga for opening up more eyes of the world to this necessary topic from a USMC Veteran (who happens to be Gay)

This is the time to finally put an end to discriminating against Americans in the military.

Adam W. in Raleigh, NC  on September 13, 2010 at 11.15 am

I’ve known about this cause for a while now, but I didn’t realize that Gaga was in on the cause. While watching the 2010 MTV VMA’s last night, I heard her say something about it. I, being gay, was interested in joining the marines, but with the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, I can’t bring myself to join. It’s a very uncomfortable feeling. I love GAGA and I love this cause. Let’s get as many people as we can to repeal this!!!

Jae B. in Fredericksburg, VA on September 13, 2010 at 10.47 am

I called and left a message with Senator Webb (VA) to please vote to end DADT.

Thank you Gaga for your outspoken commitment to this great cause.

Myrna Hughes in Portland, OR  on September 13, 2010 at 10.01 am

Many of us veterans want this unjust “policy” to completely disappear. We are getting close, but with the help of many and GAGA I can taste it =). Gaga, we love you so much!!!!!

Peyton in Toulouse, France on September 13, 2010 at 06.07 am

Nowadays it’s quite amazing to see a pop star getting involved in a cause that makes such polemic in her own country. Most of famous people prefer fighting against a global problem… great Gaga !

Erin in cleveland on September 13, 2010 at 05.48 am

GREAT to see someone so BIG in the media making such stands for the LGBTQ community.

About time we started working on complete freedom.

DUROYAUME in France on September 13, 2010 at 05.33 am

mathew in Sydney, Australia on September 13, 2010 at 04.03 am

Awesome job lady gaga, i wish i could help the american people understand that the DADT policy is wrong! I am in the Royal Australia Navy and am openly gay. I have never had any one treat me any different then anyone else nor has it made any harder for other recruits to perform there duties. Attitudes have definately changed from years gone by and the USA need to reflect these.

Thank you, Lady Gaga, for speaking about this tonight. People like you who continue to fight for equality despite all the difficulties give me hope.

Rebecca Vanover in Duffield, VA on September 13, 2010 at 01.26 am

Congats to Lady GaGa for all that she does for the servicemen and women of this country. Why should it matter if they are straight or homosexual? They are all fighting for the same thing…..FREEDOM!!!!
Also congratulations on the VMAS!

Jennifer in Canada on September 13, 2010 at 01.26 am

Ange, I think that a lot of people just didn’t know about this before Lady Gaga spotlighted it!  I myself was not aware of this action against the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy until tonight.  If I had heard of this through another source, I still would have come to this page.

I would love to support this cause, but I’m not American and therefore I don’t have a senator that I can call.  I’ll do my best to spread the word online; I hope that will make a difference.

Christian dupas on September 13, 2010 at 01.20 am

It’s so good that there are people like you lady gaga that help problems that the world terns a blind eye to. And I know if we all come together we will chang the world. And with a amazing person like you helping it every thing will be perfect.

Zachery Murray on September 13, 2010 at 01.19 am

I wonder if I could get Lady Gaga to perform at my wedding! I just have to meet the guy first! That was so BIG and not to mention smart of her, not even her outfits can top that!

Ange in Pennsylvani on September 13, 2010 at 01.01 am

I’m really glad to see that now everyone suddenly cares about Don’t Ask Don’t Tell because Lady Gaga decided to spotlight it. I’m also glad that none of you had the nuts to speak out on it before now as it’s been going on for years. It’s funny how someone’s celebrity can affect peoples moral judgment and not their own consciences. All in all I agree with this and I’m glad it’s being brought to more people’s attention and an attempts to fix it is at hand. All I’m saying is… care on your own and not because someone told you to. I also support Lady Gaga and her music so this is not an attempts to bash her. More so you America…. for not caring.

Ian Smith in Paducah, KY on September 13, 2010 at 12.57 am

GaGa, it was so perfect of you to do this on the MTV VMAs. You are helping craft more awareness to something that should never have started in the first place!!! Together everyone can fix this!!!

John D.Rudder in St. Louis, MO  on September 13, 2010 at 12.55 am

I totally support Lady Gaga (+ many other former enlisted men and woman)  and agree that DADT should be repealed immediately! If nothing else, we LBGTs, defend our own, whether our fellow discriminated against or our countrymen quite fiercely.

Tyler Lickteig in Massachusetts  on September 13, 2010 at 12.44 am

I heard of this because of Gaga and it was an amazing idea to advertise it during the VMA’s! I want to take all the action I can to help repeal this discriminatory law! I’ll be sure to be calling and having all my friends call as well! We can fix this!

brandon jones in va on September 13, 2010 at 12.40 am

Thank you Lady Gaga!  I called my Senators from Iraq…it took all of three minutes (one minute was dedicated to all the numbers I had to push on the telephone).  Lets keep the pressure up!

Joel Heflin in Marshall, TX  on September 12, 2010 at 10.53 pm

I am so glad Lady Gaga used her platform at the MTV VMA’s to speak out on behalf of those who are being oppressed by DADT!!!  Thank you Lady Gaga and thank you SLDN for not backing down and standing up for what is right!

Pearl and Cathy in Brooklyn NY on September 12, 2010 at 08.46 pm

Thank you Lady Gaga for supporting the gay community and placing emphasis on equality. It was a great idea to mention this organization on the VMA’s.

Rosalynn Alonso in New Jersey on September 12, 2010 at 08.14 pm

Lady Gaga, I thought it was a brilliant idea to talk about this cause, SLDN.org on the VMA’s because it helps bring awareness to individuals like myself. I immediately googled the website you mentioned and now I am educated on the situations our service people had to endure. Thank you for shedding light on this subject!
