GMCW Recognizes SLDN with Harmony Award

Over the weekend Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) was honored to receive the Harmony Award from the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington (GMCW). SLDN’s commitment to the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) – along with its dedication to the LGBT men and women who have served or who are currently serving our country – are among the reasons GMCW singled out SLDN for this recognition.

Joined by several members of the SLDN staff, we enjoyed an extraordinary show: GMCW’s entertaining performance of “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “In the Navy” and an emotional rendition of “Rain Down on Him” intertwined with chorus members sharing the history of gays in the armed forces along with their own personal experiences in and out of the military.

In the words of Executive Director Aubrey Sarvis, who said upon accepting the award for SLDN, “U.S. service members and veterans look ahead to open military service and what that will mean to our country and to them. One big step has been taken, one important battle won, but there are more steps to take, more voices to be heard from, and more battles to wage before the equality job is finished. Fighting together, we will get there.”

As we near a time in our country’s history when DADT is no longer the law, GMCW used this opportunity to salute every man and every woman who has ever served this nation. This tribute made the event one of the first of its kind, as we honored the sacrifices of all of our patriotic service members, regardless of their sexual orientation.

We look forward to hearing an ensemble of GMCW sing at SLDN’s 19th Annual National Dinner on March 19. RSVP today to join us!
