Grassroots Supporters Push for Repeal Ahead of Key Senate Votes

Dedicated SLDN volunteers have kept up the momentum from coast to coast these past few weeks, making sure their senators are on board to vote for repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” which is expected to come to the Senate floor later this month.Take Action

At Oberlin College in Ohio, more than 900 students received an action alert encouraging them to contact their senators, and later this week straight and gay veterans and SLDN supporters will be meeting with key Senate staffers. In Indiana, faith groups are actively signing onto a coalition letter to encourage Senator Lugar to vote for repeal. Constituents have made office visits to senators from Virginia, Maryland, and New Mexico; in these meetings, veterans discharged under DADT have joined with straight allies, and friends from the labor community have jumped into the fight as well. In Montana, we had repeal discussions with top Senate staffers.

SLDN had a presence at Atlanta Black Pride and Columbia, SC Pride this past weekend, and will appear at events in Savannah, GA; Humboldt, CA; Modesto, CA; St. Cloud, MN; Rehoboth Beach, DE; and Dallas, TX in the next two weeks.

With the help of enthusiastic grassroots volunteers, we have criss-crossed the country to educate the public about repeal and encourage constituents to contact their senators. But our work is far from over.

With the Senate vote poised to come up in the next few weeks, this is the final push for the grassroots community to take action.

Let’s weigh in with the senators this week, before they return to Capitol Hill from recess. Submitting a letter to the editor, calling and writing your senators, and hosting a speaker or event are just a few ways you can take action in your community. SLDN is ready to help you make your voice heard.
