Panel to Discuss “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” after Screening of “Ask Not” at Reel Affirmations

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network invites you to join us for the noon screening of "Ask Not" at the Reel Affirmations LGBT film festival on Saturday, October 18, in Washington, D.C.'s Lincoln Theatre, followed by a panel discussion hosted by SLDN.

"Ask Not" tells the compelling human story of current and former gay members of the armed forces who share their painful experiences of serving in silence under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Exposing the political dynamics that led to DADT, "Ask Not" also examines how social attitudes have changed since the ban was first enacted in 1993. "Ask Not" provides insight on the human toll of this discriminatory law while inspiring audiences with stories of courage and hope.

After the screening of "Ask Not," SLDN will lead a panel discussion about gays and lesbians in the military, highlighting the recent congressional hearings and the next steps to repeal DADT. The panel will be moderated by SLDN's Managing Attorney Emily B. Hecht. The panel will include former Army Sergeant Darren Manzella, who was discharged under DADT and profiled on "60 Minutes" this summer, in addition to former service members Jarrod Chlapowski and Alex Nicholson, who are featured in "Ask Not."

We can tell how civil a nation is by how well the minorities are treated—if the minorities are treated well it represents a higher level of civilization.  Are we a nation of higher civilization?  Let’s make sure we are.  We lead by example!
