Repeal Opponents Grow Louder as Battle Heats Up

Over the last week, we’ve seen an uptick in support for “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal. At the recent HRC Dinner in Washington, President Obama gave his strongest assurance yet that he would work with Congress to lift the ban. “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” dominated the news around the National Equality March, and as of today we have 181 cosponsors behind the Military Readiness Enhancement Act (HR 1283), the bill to repeal DADT.

As support builds, however, we also see the far right coming out of the woodwork with ignorance and fear. They sense that things are changing and are desperate to turn back the clock on repeal:

On Sunday, Elaine Donnelly of the Center for Military Readiness accused President Obama of undermining national security by supporting the freedom to serve.

An opinion column in the Washington Times on Tuesday claimed that Obama’s commitment to end DADT amounts to an “assault” on the military.

The Family Research Council also attacked gay and lesbian service in a broadcast on Federal News Radio earlier this week.

The fight for repeal will only intensify in coming weeks and months. This is no time to be drowned out by hysteria and the prejudice of the past. Recommit to telling the truth about DADT, and to telling our nation’s leaders that words alone are no substitute for taking action on repeal today.

DADT is a failed policy and it’s time for it to end.  There is a lot on the President’s plate right now, but he still needs to fulfill his campaign promise to end DADT.

My colleagues discussed this in our blog & podcast this week and will be discussing same-sex civil rights again next week.

Or perhaps she’s in mourning because her hero Strom Thermond is dead…..Good riddance to a bad racist.  I mean honestly Elaine, can’t you think for yourself?  Or did your daddy do all the thinking for you?  Not our fault your dad was the kind of dweeb that got his dunked in the head on the submarine.

Eric,

Thanks for posting that.  Brigadier General Stanley sounds like a real stand-up guy, and it is great that he has been appointed Under Secretary of Defense.  It would be great, if he came out against DADT.

You know that feeling you got as a kid just before Christmas? I’m getting that feeling now.

Has anyone here read the bio for the recently nominated Under Secretary of Defense General Clifford Stanley?

This guy knows what it is to be discriminated. His car even came under sniper fire, killing his uncle and injuring his wife.

You can read more about him here:
