Right-Wing Activists Seek to Reverse Progress on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Repeal
Steve Ralls of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) reports on the Huffington Post that the arch-conservative Center for Military Readiness (CMR) held a private scheming session this week in Washington, D.C., in its latest attempt to deny service members the right to serve openly and honestly. Armed with misinformation and fear tactics, CMR is attempting to mislead veterans as it has tried to do with the public on the issue of repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT).
Sensing that they are on the losing side of the debate, CMR is desperately trying to find allies in the military and regain influence lost on Capitol Hill during this summer's Congressional hearing on DADT, which was a success for Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) and a complete failure for CMR President Elaine Donnelly. As more active-duty service members report feeling comfortable serving alongside their gay and lesbian comrades, CMR will continue resorting to more outrageous claims and distortions to mask their empty arguments that protect the institutionalized discrimination which is DADT.
The American public, along with a growing number of military service members and top brass, have seen through the smoke-and-mirrors claims of CMR and understand that this ban must be repealed. The desperation of CMR is only a further testament to the undeniable failure of DADT, which undermines our military's readiness while turning away well-qualified military personnel at a time when they are needed the most. We at SLDN stand ready and committed to continue turning the tide as we pursue justice so that all members of our armed forces have the equal opportunity to serve the country they love.
