Sarvis: Double Your Investment by December 31
2011 was a banner year in our fight to bring fairness and equality to our military for gay and lesbian patriots who are serving or who wish to serve in the future. Indeed, the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) - eighteen years in the making - was a monumental achievement, but there is more to do as we work together to reach full LGBT equality in the military.
In October, SLDN filed landmark litigation on behalf of married gay and lesbian service members and veterans. Because of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and three other federal statutes, their families do not receive the same recognition, support, and benefits as their straight, married peers. This is wrong, and SLDN is on the front lines to change it - just as we were in the fight to repeal DADT.
But we need your continued support. With just three days left in the calendar year, our stalwart board member, Anna Curren - a remarkable and successful advocate who was determined to see DADT fall and who pushes today for full equality in our military - has pledged to match, dollar for dollar, everything we raise online.
That's right. Whatever you give between now and midnight on December 31 will be doubled, and your contribution will help pay for this historic court case - and get us closer to our goal of achieving full LGBT equality in our military.
Here's what Anna had to say when she made her pledge to me:
"I've been on board with SLDN for twelve years, and I have never seen a better use of my dollar. What our small SLDN staff has accomplished is, in my opinion, nothing short of a miracle."
I invite you to make one last contribution this year - even if you've already given - in order to take advantage of Anna's generous offer.
From all of us at SLDN, Happy New Year!
