Sen. Majority Leader Calls on Obama to Send Legislative Proposal to Capitol Hill

As Kerry Eleveld reports this afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) would "welcome a legislative proposal from the White House on repeal so as to provide clear guidance on what the President would like to see and when. With presidential leadership and direction, I believe we can find the time to get repeal done in this Congress. We need all the troops we can get right now."

Eleveld notes these are "the first intimations from Congressional leadership on a time frame for accomplishing repeal."

SLDN applauds Sen. Reid's call for presidential action. Congress defers to the President on matters of national defense. It is time for the Obama Administration to either endorse HR 1283 or submit legislation to lift the ban and establish a nondiscrimination policy.

This is encouraging news. I just came from an AT and once again sat through the ‘homosexual policy briefing’.  When you sit through that, you need some encouraging news.  When you sit through that brief you begin to believe that change will never come.

This is encouraging news. And given that discharges continue daily until Congressional repeal, Sen. Reid’s statement in Monday’s press conference about an interim solution—referenced in the “The New York Times” the same day by Aubrey, and supported by HRC, NGLTF, and Servicemembers United—is wonderful news for everyone who cares about what is happening to servicemembers NOW:

“‘My hope is that it can be done administratively’. A Democratic aide later clarified that Reid was speaking about the possibility of using an executive order to suspend discharges or perhaps halting enforcement of the policy by changing departmental regulations within the Department of Defense.”
