SLDN at the One Nation Working Together Rally

Over the weekend members of SLDN staff and volunteers marched alongside thousands of others to the Lincoln Memorial for the "One Nation Working Together" rally. An estimated 150,000+ people were in attendance as hundreds of groups stood and listened to messages in support of justice and inclusion. One Nation Rally

The speakers at the rally had varying messages, but the overall theme encouraged attendees to vote in this year's election. Various LGBT groups, unions, ethnic groups, etc. were represented, each with a unique message. Despite these differences, the people we saw on Saturday served as another reminder that Americans have become impatient waiting for the change we were promised during the 2008 elections.

As the SLDN group approached the Lincoln Memorial before the rally had started, individuals would read our signs and smile, cheer and sometimes even applaud. The people we came across were supportive, eagerly asking questions, taking pictures and donning a "Lift the Ban" sticker. While many of the progressive messages didn't receive this overwhelming positive support, the message of repeal among the public was one that was not controversial.

Polls show that wide majorities of people in the US on both sides of the political aisle are supportive of repealing DADT. Yet very little has been done by Congress to change it. Americans have heard the stories, understand the injustices and are ready for our elected officials to take action to repeal DADT.
