SLDN Celebrates Partnership with the Young Democrats of America

On Saturday night, the Young Democrats of America honored Servicemembers Legal Defense Network Executive Director Aubrey Sarvis with an award for the organization’s work on repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Held in Washington, D.C., the awards reception served as the official social event for YDA’s National Meeting and included supporters from across the nation.

SLDN and YDA first connected in 2009, when our organizations discussed a strategy for engaging young Democrats in the fight for repeal.  YDA stepped up to the plate, mobilizing thousands of its members to contact their senators and representatives.  At YDA's Winter Meeting this year in New Orleans, SLDN staff members facilitated a training for all YDA meeting participants on forming state and local chapter strategies to advocate for repeal.

SLDN is pleased to continue our partnership with YDA as we turn to the upcoming vote on the Senate floor.  YDA continues to support DADT repeal efforts with messaging similar to SLDN’s own nationwide action alert, and will be instrumental in state-specific actions.

We are proud of our partnership and excited to work with the next generation of pro-equality Democratic leadership on repeal.  Our collective action represents the power of coalition-building, and we look forward to working with YDA and other groups to push repeal to the finish line this year.
