SLDN Statement on President’s Meeting with Gen. Amos
Today SLDN issued the following statement on President Obama's scheduled meeting with Marine Corps Commandant Nominee General James Amos:
"SLDN hopes that General James Amos and President Obama are in agreement on the need to repeal ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell.’ Department of Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Admiral Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have both said they understand that President Obama wants to see this law repealed. No doubt General Amos will have the opportunity to fully share his views on DADT when he comes before the Senate Armed Services Committee for his confirmation hearing later this summer," said Aubrey Sarvis.

My guess is that General Amos will be loyal to his commander’s guidance. Now is the time for the President to step up to Congress and his executive and military subordinates to close the deal on ending DADT. First, he must push Congress to send him the bill to sign. Then, because of the bizarre elements of the bill (it allows a cabinet officer and the top military officer to veto implementation), Obama will have to push further until DADT is finally ended. Too often Obama has taken an aloof and “neutral” stance at key moments. Ending DADT is not an intellectual exercise. It is increasingly tough politics. If DADT doesn’t end, it will be Obama’s direct choice and responsibility. If it does end, it will be his historical contribution to civil rights and military effectiveness.
