SLDN Supporter Speaks Out for Repeal

In Monday’s edition of The Miami Herald, a letter to the editor from 22-year Coast Guard veteran USCG Commander Jim Scheye called for repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” because it undermines the core military values by forcing gay and lesbian patriots to lie:

“Opposite of what many supporters of DADT claim, these professionals were outstanding performers and caring mentors, often received accolades for military bearing, met all standards expected while in uniform and were well respected by their leaders, peers and subordinates. And, some have followed the law for 17 years: they do not ‘tell.’

“One was a stellar subordinate officer who resigned her commission and then was hired as a civil servant carrying out the same duties. I supported her being hired regardless of suspecting she was a lesbian. When I asked why she resigned, our resulting discussion included that gays are expected to lie about or hide their sexuality; her integrity was at a higher standard.”

Commander Scheye urges Sen. George LeMieux (R-FL) to join Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) in supporting repeal, which would enable the military to continue its proud tradition of embracing diversity, adapting to change and becoming stronger as a result:

“Military personnel have proven repeatedly through our nation's history that they can carry out orders and laws that may be unpopular with some of the public. They have proven this with the integration of minorities in all services, acceptance of women at the four service academies and in serving with our allied forces, most of whom permit gays to serve openly. They prove every day that they are professionals, can capably complete their work and honorably protect our nation.”

We need your help now. Contact both your senators today. Tell them to ensure all qualified Americans can serve by voting to end DADT.
