SLDN to Co-Present ‘Semper Fi’ at SF Film Festival
SLDN is proud to partner with Frameline to co-present Semper Fi: One Marine's Journey at the Frameline Festival in San Francisco, June 14-24, 2007.
Semper Fi is the story of Jeff Key (pictured), a gay marine from Parrish, Alabama, and his crisis of conscience while serving in Iraq. Key is a former SLDN client, and the film is based on his critically acclaimed one-man play, The Eyes of Babylon. From Frameline:
"Lance Corporal Jeff Key is one of the most patriotic people you'll ever meet. A gay man from Alabama, he felt there was something missing in his life, so, at age 34, he joined the Marines. They bent the rules to accommodate his age, but he kept his homosexuality a secret. Semper Fi blends documentary and interview footage with Key’s one-man theater performance about his tour of duty in Iraq as a closeted gay soldier. Semper Fi paints a refreshing portrait of a gay man we rarely meet and proves that patriotism, like sexuality, comes in many different packages."

i just watched jeff on the television…..i am a former marine and am aswell a gay man.gay or not that had nothing to do with me being a marine.my father was and he was and still even though he has passed…my hero.naturally i wanted to be like him….i have seen another man ..though much younger then my father that has the amazing qualities that i found only in a very few people.i cryed after and during your play jeff.i couldnt believe how insightful you are and hw beautiful your soul is.i almost had to stop watching a few times because i felt your pain.your tears opened many of my past doors and allowed me to see the rooms that i have run away from so long ago.your words are a breath of life to me aswell as i am sure to all those that are willing to see you and your play as what it is…a testimony of love ,life and liberty in the persuit of truth and justice.in the search for what makes human life real and valuable…what makes each and everyone of us important no matter the differance or the like there of.you are and incredible man and god has his hands on you and your path…i thank you so much for your story and for you ...you are what most need to look to to find the reality of what should be rather then what is….thanks again….sincerely ...steven reel
