SLDN, Truman National Security Project Honor Veterans at Manor View Elementary School
This Veterans Day, SLDN Grassroots/Policy Advocate Elizabeth Shirey and I joined the Truman National Security Project and Mission Continues at Manor View Elementary School, located on the Fort Meade military installation in Maryland. Target Stores and the Heart of America Foundation sponsored the unveiling of Manor View’s new and renovated library with a celebration that included military families from the post, as well as deployed military parents overseas via live video chat. SLDN staff worked with other volunteers, former veterans, and community members to help add the finishing touches to the library that would be opening the same day. The transformation is part of the Target School Library Makeovers initiative and includes more than 2,000 new books, a new layout, new furniture, and new technology for the students.
Joined by Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, as well as the Installation Commander Colonel Daniel Thomas, this library renovation was the 32nd sponsored library by Target and the Heart of America Foundation in 2010, and the last one for the year. This renovation and opening celebration was even more important noting the sacrifices that the parents of these students make every day while serving in our nation’s armed forces.
This Veterans Day we acknowledged the sacrifices that current and former service members make, but as always, we are reminded of the LGBT men and women in uniform who also make the same sacrifices, yet are not acknowledged. Watch SLDN’s Veterans Day tribute video, released in honor of all veterans, LGBT and straight.
We can show our support for veterans by advocating for repeal of the law that dishonors them. As Congress prepares to return to Washington next week, we must dedicate our time and effort to make sure that the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) will pass during the lame duck by calling both our senators and urging them to vote in favor of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal. Call your senators today.
