Stossel Makes Libertarian Case for Repeal

John Stossel, award-winning news correspondent, columnist and author, wrote today on the conservative blog Townhall.com for the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

He argues that banning open service for gay and lesbian service members puts the United States in the same embarrassing category as many countries that do not value freedom and justice for all:

“America is one of many countries that forbid openly gay people to serve in the military. Others are: Cuba, China, Egypt, Greece, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Turkey and Venezuela.

“See a pattern?

“With a few exceptions, those are not countries where free people want to live.”

Stossel also points out that the experiences of other countries allowing open service only shows that overturning DADT would not cause the disruption to unit cohesion that repeal opponents claim:

“The Government Accountability Office studied four countries that allow gays to serve -- Canada, Israel, Germany and Sweden. It found that ‘military officials from each country said that, on the basis of their experience, the inclusion of homosexuals in their militaries has not adversely affected unit readiness, effectiveness, cohesion or morale.’”

Coming a day after Bill O’Reilly announced his support for repeal, John Stossel’s column is the latest illustration that a clear majority of Americans on both sides of the political aisle want DADT to go.

Tell both your senators to listen to the overwhelming majority of Americans and vote for repeal.

I believe Russia also belongs on this list.  A suggestion for the SLDN webmaster:  could you slightly enlarge the SLDN mast head and list in small font on one side the 10 most important armed forces that have open service, and on the other side the 10 most important armed forces that do not have open service?  Keep it there until DADT is ended.  We in the US belong to a shameful group, and every American should know it.
