Tell Peter Pace:  Apologize.  Now.

Last night, General Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, told The Chicago Tribune that he opposes repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" because lesbians and gays are "immoral," and the military is not "well served by a policy that says it is OK to be immoral in any way." SLDN immediately condemned General Pace's comments, and called on the Chairman to apologize. “General Pace’s comments are outrageous, insensitive and disrespectful to the 65,000 lesbian and gay troops now serving in our armed forces,” said C. Dixon Osburn, our executive director. “Our men and women in uniform make tremendous sacrifices for our country, and deserve General Pace’s praise, not his condemnation. As a Marine and a military leader, General Pace knows that prejudice should not dictate policy. It is inappropriate for the Chairman to condemn those who serve our country because of his own personal bias. He should immediately apologize for his remarks.” General Pace's comments also show the real legs propping up the military's ban: homophobia, prejudice and discrimination. Unable to show a shred of evidence that gays and lesbians do anything but strengthen our military capability, General Pace and others have decided to resort to a 'morality' argument. Military readiness be damned; the small-mindedness of a few now directs our national policy. That's not the way it should be. So, join SLDN in standing up for LGBT military personnel. General Pace’s comments although irresponsible are his personal thoughts.  The don’t ask don’t tell policy is necessary otherwise there would still be a complete and total ban on gays in the military.  Think about it this way.  Why is there a ban on women serving in combat positions with men?  It is not because they are physically inferior etc… but because the combat readiness of the military would be compromised.  A combat unit is comprised of a group of men in a nonerotic structure that fosters cohesion and bonding within that unit in a nonerotic way.  By letting gays serve in the military openly we will be compromising our combat effectiveness by letting that nonerotic bond that develops between fighting men undermined homoerotic tendencies of gay and/or lesbian servicemembers.

As a Christian, I find it bizzare that the person (because I suspect it is the same person writing repeatedly)who is expounding on how morally corrupt gays are is hiding behind “anonymous”.  I thought you were supposed to “let your light shine”.  I believe that only a person who is acting morally wrong would not want the world to know who they are.  As the mother of one of the plantiffs in Cook v Rumsfield, I am horrified you would refer to my child or any other of the fine GLBT people I know as “freaks”.  My child is not a freak; she is an honored veteran, good citizen, and caring person to her friends and family.  As far as “shoving the gay agenda in everyone’s face”, the complainers choose what they read or listen to in the news.  No one has tied you in a chair, chained your hands, or taped your eyes open.  If you don’t want to receive a message that is contrary to what you believe, walk away or hit the off button.  Do not degrade another human being because you are personally uncomfortable.  There is not anywhere that someone has told you to shut up and not express your opinion.  You are simply being asked to do it in a morally and educated manner.  There is a huge difference between moderated and fair debate versus an attack on the personhood of someone who was created equally valuable in the eyes of God. I don’t know who taught these people to hate so much but I pray that people will come into their lives that will show them how to love.  Let’s respect and support our service members and not subject them to more hatred than they would ever encounter outside their homeland.

Wow… in reading some of these comments, I would really like to know where some of these people get their information… and in some cases their education! <BR><BR>I served in the military for many years and even came out (privately) while in the military. I knew many people who were gay and they were all great service members.<BR><BR>Gen. Pace has the right to his opinions. I don’t have to agree with it. My issue with his comparison to adultery. I have seen so many military members, men and women, committing adultery. All ranks, all branches of service. My ex brother-in-law cheated on my sister while he served. His Commander told him to leave the other woman alone. Well he got her pregnant. There were no charges. If he had been sleeping with another man, he would have been dishonorable discharged. Where is the equity in punishment if he considers both “immoral”. <BR><BR>Seems like their is some serious inequality in punishing these acts he considers “immoral”.<BR><BR>Plenty of gay military members served proudly. We give our lives to protect some of these “Anonymous” idiots rights to say what they feel. Get off your high horse and open your freaking minds. <BR><BR>Get over it!

Interesting that all of the posters making anti-gay comments feel the need to do so anonymously.<BR><BR>Anon from 10:25 am - there are twelve months in the year. If there is a GLBT pride month, that means there are eleven others, not nine. Maybe you should stop worrying about gay people and take a kindergarten refresher course.<BR><BR>Also, “sports players also, except women”? Last time I checked, women were abou 51% of the population, ans since the advent of Title IX, also half of (high school and college) athletes. Nice sexism there, buddy.<BR><BR>X-liberal, you do not know what God thinks of anything. None of us do and it is incredible hubris to think that you speak for him.

There is nothing wrong with calling an immoral act exactly what it is. Everybody gets it wrong with the seperation of church and state. Our forefathers knew exactly what kind of freaks would be around this great country of ours.  They wanted the state not to dictate to the church like mother England did. They wanted the freedom from that.  Their words specifically dictate that.  <BR>  This country was based ne Religious principles. The Gays, Lesbian, and Bi dysfuntionals want everything to be adjusted for their sake. I believe that when GOD said it’s wrong - it’s wrong. Hate the SIN but care for the sinner. The belief of years ago was that the Gays and other freaks were born that way.  They even had an outspoken advocate with an extensive background in biology back up what they were saying, until contradicted himself because he said for all those years he had been lying because he was gay also. Now when he turned back to normal, the Gay community droped him from being one of theirs. <BR> The bottom line is if you agree to what they say, you’re ok in their book.  If you say anything against them, they are outraged!<BR> I applaud General Pace for standing up for his convictions and vowing not to bow done to these degenerates.<BR> Good luck on judgement day you whacky people.  You really do know where GOD stands on this.  <BR>Signed:<BR>X-liberal

This text was taken directly from the Marine Corps homosexual training guidance.  There are almost identical lines in all of the other services’ policies and regulations.  <BR><BR>“IN CONCERT WITH OUR CORE VALUES, ALL MARINES WILL BE TREATED WITH DIGNITY AND RESPECT.  MISTREATMENT OF ANY MARINE IS CONSIDERED UNACCEPTABLE” <BR><BR>General Pace is the highest ranking military person and has clearly violated a regulation.  I don’t care if you agree or disagree with how I live my life but I do have a problem with leaders promoting discrimination and disrespect towards other members of the military.  These types of actions are truly what disrupts unit moral and cohesion not the gay service members.

FYI:<BR>This is the United States of America and its declaration starts “When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume, among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.”<BR>We came into being with the knowledge of God who made known in Jude 1:7 “just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.”<BR>The General is being an American in stating the immorality of homosexuality. It is the undisciplined action of the people that is the sin.

Why is it thats gays are allowed to shove all of thier beliefs down our throats. But the second someone speaks out againts what they preach its considered hateful.  <BR>General Pace is allowed to have his belief and state it. <BR> I also served in the Military and really dont care if gays are in the ranks.  What I do care about is someone telling me that I cant speak my mind if I dont think its right.<BR> Who are the gays to tell anyone that we must accept thier life style and if not remain silent about it!<BR> General Pace owes not one person a apology for what he believes!

It is about time people in higher authority start to speak out against this practice.  I am sick and tired of my kids being brainwashed in the school system to think is is okay to be gay!  Well, it is not!  It is a sickness and should be addressed as such. If you want to act this way, then keep it to yourself and quit trying to am it down our throtes all of time.  Having your ow awareness month is rediculous.  We should make the other nine months anti-gay months.  Everyone I know in the military has said they would not want to trust their lives with a gay person.  Same with sports players also, except women.  They accept the idea of loving eachother.

I agree with General Pace. While the arena in which he stated his views was not the best choice. His opinion does not say that gay people whom are serving now are bad at their work, so let’s seperate the difference. A conservative Christian will tell you that being gay is immoral according to the Bible, and why should someone have to compromise their ethical and moral beliefs just because others don’t fall into that line? I agree with other posts, when those of us exercising our ethics and morals don’t fall inline with bad behavior then we are the bad guys and need to apologize. NO WAY, our country was founded on better principles than that! As long as it didn’t cost you your life then leave it be and have tolerance yourself for the vast majority that believes such as Gen Pace does. You don’t want to apologize for your lifestyle, we don’t want to apologize for our opinion of it, and neither should he.

Like “One Jewish Dyke” really tell me who you are?  Btw, I only posted once.  Don’t know who the rest of the smart people are.  Oh, and excuse me for getting the months wrong.  Will look into that refresher course, thanks.  Also, comment on women in sports wasn’t sexist.  Just a point that many of the women sports figures (basketball, tennis, golf) are lesbians and like it.  To be honest, two or more fine girls together are a turnon.  It is the Dykes that ruin it for the others. All manly and everything, yuk.  And for MilitaryLez, you are so brave coming out “Privately”.  All gays hang around eachother in the military and that is why they find it acceptable. When they hang around others, they lie about their ways.  Go figure.

People seem to revere the right of free speech…until someone says something they disagree with.<BR><BR>When Rosie O’Donnell claimed that fundamentalism of any religion was bad, there were Christians calling for her to be fired.<BR><BR>And as for people who say that gays are shoving our lifestyles down your throats…did you ever stop to think for one second that if you weren’t fighting our very right to existence 24/7, you’d probably hear a whole lot less about our putative “lifestlyes”?<BR><BR>Don’t call a person immoral and then complain about how he’s shoving his lifestyle down your throats, just because he dares to object!

As a former officer in the Army, I understand and respect Gen Pace’s position.  He is a fine officer who speaks his opinion.  <BR><BR>One of the most confusing executive orders ever was the don’t ask don’t tell policy.  As far as I know it remains a violation of the Universal Code of Military Justice to engage in the type of sexual activities that being gay implies.  As an officer, I was sworn to uphold the law which said to boot them if you knew them to be gay.  Don’t ask, don’t tell did not change that law.  It just said don’t tell anyone and we’ll look the other way.  <BR><BR>Personally, I agree with Gen Pace, but I recognize that my opinion is based on my own religious beliefs. I will leave it to the Congress to decide what the laws should be, and as a good officer would have upheld them as I was sworn to do, just as our active duty, Reserve and Guard officers must do today.  <BR><BR>And may we have praise for the great job they have all done in some very difficult times.

I didn’t think General Pace’s comments were homophobic; although he was expressing his opinion on a senstive subject, I thought that his statements were free of any hate rhetoric and actually acknowledged the opposite side’s viewpoint. See The Ticks and Tocks

If General Pace believes all gays and lesbians are immoral, that is his right, although I have to profess my shock that the man has not yet figured out there at open LGBT civilian employees at the Pentagon with whom he works every day - one wonders how he stands all the immorality around him.  The really troubling issue here is that he is using his personal religious beliefs to justify policy. The entire point of the separation of church and state is that policies and laws are based on reason, not arbitrary religious beliefs.<BR><BR>And for those who support Pace’s comments - consider this. According to reports I have read, Pace is a Roman Catholic. I was raised Catholic, and there are a lot of other “lifestyle choices” considered as immoral, if not worse, than either homosexuality or adultery. Included in those are heretical lifestyles, which includes basically all the mainstream Protestant religions, blasphemous lifestyles, which includes all the evangelical and fundamentalist non-denominational churches, and of course the adulterous lifestyles chosen by those who leave their spouses and “marry” again (although we know the Bible does not allow divorce). Should we allow Pace to use his personal religious beliefs to exclude all those “immoral” people from the military?

I am outraged by General Pace’s comments.<BR>I call for his immediate removal from his position.<BR>The Generals religious beliefs have no place in the government.<BR>Our government still operates on the practice of separation of church and state.<BR>Up until January of this year I worked for the US Marine Corps and I have personally met General Pace.<BR>Now I have absolutely have no respect for the man.<BR> <BR>I served in the US Army Reserve, as an Officer, over 20 years ago and I was dishonorably discharged. How is it that Gays can’t serve their country?<BR>What can be done?<BR>What can I do to help?<BR>All this hate has to end.<BR>I’ve had it.<BR>This is supposed to be the land of the free.<BR>Gays don’t even have civil rights.
