The Groundswell is Building
If you ever doubted that we're making progress to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," you should have attended Phoenix Pride on April 18. Throngs of people waited in line in the hot sun to sign petitions at the SLDN booth. Many were from the LGBT community, but our straight allies were also well represented.
It was truly amazing to see the enthusiasm for repealing this unjust law and replacing it with a nondiscrimination policy to ensure that gay and lesbian Americans have the freedom to serve openly in our armed forces.
Many of those signing petitions didn't realize the government still discharges an average of two service members a day (13,000 since the law was implemented in 1993) because of their sexual orientation. Several were also surprised to learn that 26 nations already allow open service for gays and lesbians.
Rather than join that proven working model, the US is now allowing convicted felons in our military because we're in sore need of recruits.
I am confident we will prevail. Our cause is just...full civil rights for those willing to pay the ultimate price to ensure freedom and a stronger military. Want to do your part? Join SLDN today!
