“Unfriendly Fire”
We wholeheartedly endorse the new book out by Nathaniel Frank, senior research fellow at the Palm Center, called "Unfriendly Fire: How the Gay Ban Undermines the Military and Weakens America." It contains tons of stories and evidence that "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" harms military readiness. It also shows that including gays and lesbians in the military makes our armed forces stronger, a fact that has been affirmed by study after study; no more studies are needed.
There is a human side to all of this, too, which Frank captures through groundbreaking profiles of LGBT service members (many of whom are SLDN clients). These folks have experienced overt discrimination under the ban, despite the tremendous contributions our LGBT patriots make each day to every branch of our armed forces.
The book has been endorsed by SLDN Executive Director Aubrey Sarvis, retired Army General and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff John Shalikashvili, as well as by Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-PA), Rep. Marty Meehan (D-MA) and Senior Fellow for the Center for American Progress, Larry Korb.
The time for repeal of the law is this year. Let's get it done.
