USMC: Stepping Smartly as Promised
The 35th Commandant of the Marine Corps, General James Amos, spoke last Tuesday at the Marine Memorial Club in San Francisco about the force’s future amid new leadership, budget cuts, and new laws. One question in particular involved “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) implementation, to which General Amos answered, “…we're going to implement this thing, and we're going to do it with dignity, [and] we're going to do it with respect…”
Only a few short months ago, the new-to-the-job Commandant was singing a different tune. Now, General Amos is communicating with and leading the 240,000+ active duty and reserve Marines to a smooth, timely implementation. He is delivering as promised:
“Let me tell how we treat each other as Marines. We treat each other with respect; we treat each other with dignity; we care for one another; we love one another. And we're willing to give our lives for one another.”
Under the leadership of General Amos, the Marines are stepping up smartly and living up to the proud tradition of being the “first to fight.”

Cheers to General Amos!! It is ironic that the Service Chief who was the most vocal opponent of the repeal of DADT just last fall is now stepping up to the plate and leading the pack. Surprisingly, others like Air Force Chief of Staff General Norton Schwartz have been mum.

As a former Marine Corporal who criticized the Commandant in a speech at Cleveland City Hall aimed at getting Republican Senator George Voinovich to vote for the Repeal (which he did), I am relieved and elated that the Commandant is now on board.
