Veteran in South Florida: “Let Them Serve Openly”

Today Commander Jim Scheye, 22-year veteran of the Coast Guard and friend of SLDN, has a letter to the editor published in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.  He states that based on his experiences in the armed forces, he argues that gay, lesbian, and bisexual soldiers are "fit for full duty" but frequently hindered by "don't ask, don't tell:"

"Fit for full duty" is a term used in the military to indicate a service member is capable of carrying out all possible assigned duties. Currently, many gays and lesbians do not enter the military, don't extend military careers to a point they can retire, or limit their military career choices to avoid potential inspection of their private lives. They are not permitted opportunity for "full duty" due to the limits of DADT.

As Commander Scheye pointed out in his last letter to the editor, it is essential for supporters of open service to reach out to their senators today. Tell them to protect the career opportunities of every servicemember.
