Vice President Biden Talks Repeal on The Rachel Maddow Show

Last night, Vice President Biden appeared on The Rachel Maddow Show, talking about a number of things: The economy, the surprise upset in the Delaware Republican primary and “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” The Vice President predicted that the Defense Authorization bill in the Senate will pass in the coming weeks, with DADT repeal language intact. Said Biden, “There’s gonna be a vote on a bill, authorizing spending for the Defense Department. In that bill, there is a provision to repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’ End it. Bury it. Now, the Republicans are gonna introduce, at some point, an amendment to strike it from the bill. We’ve got the votes to defeat that. Then the Republicans, if they are as foolish as I think they may be, then they may try to hold up the Defense Authorization Bill. And they’re gonna probably filibuster that.”

Well I don't know about that, but I know it is our job, as advocates who care about equality for our brave service members around the world, serving in silence every day, to make sure we have the votes, not only to protect the DADT repeal language but to make sure the entire Defense bill PASSES. If the bill doesn’t pass this year, we’re dead in the water.

We must work everyone we know (coworkers, family, friends, enemies, acquaintances, neighbors, etc) to call their senators and demand that they work with Majority Leader Reid, Chairman Levin and Senator Lieberman to defend repeal against any attempt to rip it out AND to pass the Defense bill before they call it quits and head off to the elections in November. After they have made that call, tell them to tell everyone THEY know and get those people to call the Senate.

The opposition is fired up and working incredibly hard to derail this chance of passing DADT repeal. We have to work harder, fight tougher, and keep focused on the goal at hand: Defeat any attempt to rip out the repeal provisions, and pass the bill that makes those provisions law.

Together we can make a difference. Together we can get this bill across the finish line and on the path to full repeal. Together we can fight for those who fight for us, in silence.

Call both your senators today at (202) 224-3121 and tell them to get repeal done the week of September 20.
