The Carson Family

October 16, 2012

Dear Members of Congress,

My name is Jessica Carson, and I am an active duty USAF Airman 1st Class.  I am married to a loving and supportive woman.  I have been in the USAF for over a year now, and we have been married for nine months.  My wife provides the comfort and support I need each day.  Unfortunately, my wife and I are not considered married in the eyes of the United States Air Force and feel the constant sting of the Defense of Marriage Act.

I love and enjoy the opportunities the Air Force has provided me.  But it is difficult to go to work each day with peers whose families are supported by the military simply because they married someone of the "correct" gender.  My wingmen and my wife are able to take the sting out of being constantly referred to as a "single" Airman.  They are able to personally provide the support that the current system denies.

When the CMSgt of the Air Force visited my base earlier this year, I asked him what was being done to help families like mine.  He shrugged and said, "You’ll have to go through Congress."  So now, I look to you, I hope you will support our family as we work to support and defend yours.

Sincerely,

Jessica Carson
