Boston Herald: Its time to close door on dont ask

It’s time that gay men and women are allowed to serve openly in the military. At a time when the Army has reduced enlistment standards, the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy likely does more harm than good.

About 1,000 members of the armed forces are discharged each year because their homosexuality has become known. There is no evidence that these people are anything but law-abiding and able. The Government Accountability Office says 800 of those discharged since 1993 have been “mission-critical.” In addition to combat troops, these are scarce translators, nurses and other medical personnel, technicians and specialists of all kinds necessary to support a first-class fighting force.
