Chicago Salutes Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Veterans

WHAT: 'With Justice for All,' Chicago's salute to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender veterans and service members and call for repeal of the federal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" ban on openly lesbian, gay and bisexual service members. The event is presented by the Chicago Commission on Human Relations Advisory Council on Veterans' Affairs and the Advisory Council on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues.

WHO: Rear Admiral Alan M. Steinman, MD USPHS/USCG (Ret.), one of the highest ranking military officers to come out as gay, will deliver the keynote address. He will be joined by Tammy Duckworth, Director of Veteran's Affairs for the State of Illinois and former Iraq War veteran. Veterans Antonio Agnone, Jarrod Chlapowski, Alex Nicholson, and Julianne Sohn will also participate in the event.

WHY: According to the Urban Institute, more than 1 million LGBT veterans are currently living in the United States, with over 18,000 in the Chicago metropolitan area. The Urban Institute also estimates there are 65,000 lesbian, gay and bisexual service members currently on active duty and serving in the National Guard and Reserves.
