Charlie Morgan, a chief warrant officer in the New Hampshire National Guard, has incurable stage-four breast cancer, but that's not what scares her.

"If something happens, and I can't work anymore, that frightens me," she said.

Charlie's 4-year-old daughter, Casey, receives all the benefits any other soldier's child would. But the federal Defense of Marriage Act prohibits Charlie's wife, Karen, from receiving any benefits,

including medical insurance worth approximately $10,000, survivor's benefits estimated at about $300,000 and, eventually, a spot next to Charlie in a military cemetery.

So in late October, Charlie and Karen joined 13 others in suing the Department of Defense.
