AP: House hearing on “don’t ask, don’t tell”

A critic of letting gays serve openly in the military says the number of service members with HIV would probably increase.

Elaine Donnelly, of a group called the Center for Military Readiness, was immediately denounced at a House hearing. Congressman Vic Snyder of Arkansas, who is a Vietnam veteran and a doctor, called the comment "inappropriate." He says maybe the military should recruit only lesbians since they have a low incidence of HIV.

The hearing before the House Armed Services personnel subcommittee was the first congressional hearing on the Pentagon's "don't ask, don't tell" policy since it was adopted 15 years ago. The chairwoman calls it a "long-overdue review."

Supporters of letting gays serve openly say the policy will only change if Barack Obama is elected.
