Sergeant Darren Manzella, Featured on 60 Minutes, Visits Washington for January 8 Media Briefing
WHAT: Army Sergeant Darren Manzella, an openly gay medic featured on the December 16 edition of CBS News 60 Minutes, will visit Washington and talk with reporters about his experience serving under Dont Ask, Dont Tell, and his work with Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN).
WHO: Sergeant Manzella will be joined in Washington by Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of SLDN.
WHY: Sergeant Manzella reported to CBS correspondent Lesley Stahl that he has served openly during much of his time in the Army, with the full support of his colleagues and command. SLDN reports that a growing number of service members are also serving openly without incident. The organization is aware of more than 500 troops who say they are out to their colleagues and, in some cases, their commands, and have come out without incident. Manzella will join SLDN to talk about changing attitudes in the armed forces, and his experience serving openly, despite Dont Ask, Dont Tell.
WHEN: Tuesday, January 8, 2008 @ 9:30am
WHERE: Lisagor Room at the National Press Club
529 14th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C.
