SLDN Disappointed by President-Elect Obama's Selection of Reverend Rick Warren for Inaugural Invocation
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) issued the following statement regarding the selection of Reverend Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at President-elect Barack Obama's 56th Presidential Inauguration on January 20.
"We are disappointed by President-elect Obama's selection of the Reverend Rick Warren to deliver his invocation and urge him to reconsider this decision," said Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network. "Rev. Warren's divisive attacks on equality for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community should not be rewarded at this historic time of change and inclusion that Obama's swearing in marks for our nation."
Servicemembers Legal Defense Network is a national, non-profit legal services, watchdog and policy organization dedicated to ending discrimination against and harassment of military personnel affected by "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and related forms of intolerance. A "Guide to ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell' " for journalists is available at http://sldn.3cdn.net/43b1d9fec919b5918b_1zm6bxv9l.pdf.
