Congressional Hearings Next Week
WASHINGTON, DC, May 8 - Lt. Dan Choi, an Iraq veteran and Arabic linguist, was fired this week for being gay. Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, the 16-year old advocacy and legal services organization, represents Choi and will be fighting to prevent his imminent discharge.
"As commander in chief, President Obama must articulate his commitment and a plan, not just a policy position, to end these discharges and do so with a sense of urgency," said Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of SLDN. " Obama is, after all, the chief enforcer of ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell.' He and Congress should get moving. Two soldiers are getting fired every day because of their sexual orientation."
Almost 13,000 have been kicked out since 1994."Don't ask, Don't Tell" is expected to come up during congressional hearings on the defense budget on Wednesday, May 13.
To interview Choi or Sarvis, please contact SLDN Communications Director, Kevin Nix at knix@sldn.org or 202.251.5553.
Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (www.sldn.org) is a national, non-profit legal services and policy organization dedicated to ending "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." A journalists' guide is available here.
