SLDN Statement on Congressman Marty Meehan
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Marty Meehan (D-MA), chair of the House Armed Services Sub-Committee on Oversight and Investigations, and lead sponsor of the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, today announced in the Associated Press he will leave Congress to become Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts in Lowell. Below is the statement of C. Dixon Osburn, SLDN’s executive director:
“Congressman Marty Meehan has been a formidable leader and ally in the fight to repeal the ban on gays in the military since his first days in Congress. He told me once that he wanted to lift the ban so that he could look his future grandchildren in the eye and say he helped right a terrible wrong. We thank Congressman Meehan for his commitment to our national security and to ending discrimination. We congratulate the Congressman on his appointment today. We will miss him in Congress. The fight to lift the ban, however, will continue, with hearings in the House and a bill in the Senate. Momentum to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is growing. Through Congressman Meehan’s tireless efforts, there is a strong group of bipartisan lawmakers who support the vision for equality and strength. We look forward to working with our allies in Congress and continuing in the fight to repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ once and for all.”
