SLDN’s 15th Annual National Dinner to Honor Showtime’s ‘The L Word’
What: Servicemembers Legal Defense Network’s (SLDN) 15th annual national dinner, benefiting SLDN’s legal aid and advocacy work to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
Who: SLDN’s national dinner will honor Showtime’s The L Word for an upcoming storyline related to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Cast members from the show, along with series creator Ilene Chaiken, will accept the award on the program’s behalf.
Former Army Sergeant Bleu Copas, an Arabic linguist dismissed under the military’s ban, will also appear. Sergeant Copas’s story captured national attention following his dismissal, and he appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Good Morning America and in newspapers across the country. Sergeant Copas was named one of the year’s 'Out 100' by Out magazine, and was featured among Instinct Magazine’s ‘Leading Men of the Year.’
Why: The Department of Defense fires at least two people every day for being lesbian, gay or bisexual. SLDN is the only national legal aid and policy organization assisting service members impacted by “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and related policies of intolerance. Since 1993, SLDN has answered more than 7,500 calls for assistance.
