(Washington, D.C.) Army Veteran and Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) Executive Director Aubrey Sarvis has released the following statement in the wake of Thursday night’s exchange regarding the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” during the Fox News Presidential Debate in Orlando, FL.

“No service member defending our freedoms in Iraq should be booed for expressing his or her views as an individual. I regret that this brave patriot was not defended last night in Orlando and that no candidate spoke up to say ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ repeal has been settled by Congress and our nation’s senior military leaders – and is supported by more than eighty percent of the American people. The service member will have no comment on this matter and has referred all inquiries to Servicemembers Legal Defense Network.”

Never underestimate the venom of many in the Republican right wing base and their candidates who know they don’t have a chance for nomination if they admit to supporting Open Service.  I fear a resurgent effort against open service as soon as next month in conference committee work for the Armed Services Authorization Bill.  This outburst just shows SLDN will contiue to have their work cut out for them in the future.

I saw this last night and I was extremely disappointed. Not even Ron Paul stepped up and he supports the repeal. This again highlights the life of a Soldier, serving a country whose potential Republican leader has no regard for his service to the country making sacrifices these Republican candidates don’t understand.  He will continue to serve this country as I and other GLBT soldiers have and continue to do. Please let this Soldier know that he is not alone and we support him.
