Veterans & Advocates to Rally in Washington for Repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) announced that it will host the Freedom to Serve rally and Lobby Day, which will take place noon Friday, March 13, on the Capitol Hill grounds in Washington, D.C.
WHAT: A Capitol Hill rally in Washington, D.C., to support legislative efforts to repeal the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) ban on gay and lesbian service members. The rally will show solidarity for all our service members and help build momentum for President-elect Obama's commitment to lift this discriminatory ban. We will also advocate for congressional action this year on the "Military Readiness Enhancement Act," which would allow all qualified Americans to serve openly regardless of sexual orientation.
WHO: Veterans and advocates from across the country will be joined by a lineup of speakers. (A comprehensive list of speakers will be available here.)
WHY: Since the DADT law was instituted in 1993, over 12,500 men and women have been discharged because of their sexual orientation. According to a 2007 report by the Williams Institute, DADT has also discouraged nearly 45,000 Americans from joining and remaining in the armed forces.
WHEN: Noon March 13, 2009
WHERE: Capitol Hill grounds
Servicemembers Legal Defense Network is a national, non-profit legal services, watchdog and policy organization dedicated to ending discrimination against and harassment of military personnel affected by "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and related forms of intolerance.
