Vital Voice: Poll Shows Shift in Attitude Toward “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”
A new Washington Post-ABC News poll has indicated a significant shift in Americans’ attitudes toward openly gay men and women serving in the military since “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” debuted, according to a press release from GLAAD. The poll showed that 75 percent of Americans now believe GLBT people should be allowed to serve openly in the armed forces.
Also since “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” debuted, support for gays serving openly has risen from 32 percent to 64 percent among Republicans and more than 75 percent of both Democrats and independents currently support gays serving openly.
The poll also showed that among religious denominations 57 percent of white evangelical Christians in addition to more than 80 percent of white Catholics and those with no declared religious affiliation support gays serving openly.
The poll coincides with Congress’ first hearing on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” since the policy’s inception in 1993. The hearing is scheduled for tomorrow, July 23.
