"Mr. President, I urge you to seize your first opportunity to get rid of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" when you submit your defense budget to Congress in May. If you don't, you will be signaling that it's OK on your watch to continue the firing of gay and lesbian service members under the law.
"On the campaign trail you promised, repeatedly, to end this law. On the White House website you pledge to get rid of it. But since November, you've been silent. Meanwhile, the opposition has begun their aggressive campaign to keep openly gay and lesbian service members out of the military, and 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' on the books.
"The estimated 65,000 gay and lesbian service members in our military are making the ultimate sacrifice, just like their straight colleagues. Now is the time to speak up -- and lead -- so our military can retain and recruit -- not fire -- the best and brightest to fight and win this nation's wars."
Sincerely,
