Megan Dresch joined the United States Army on August 22, 2001. After basic training and an eight-week military police training course, Dresch was stationed in Kaiserlautern, Germany, and served in the Military Police.

Dresch found the burden of lying about her relationship with her girlfriend at home stressful. In an effort to relieve this stress, Dresch sought leave to speak with the Chaplain at her base from her command.

When told she would need to reveal her reasons for seeing the Chaplain, Dresch sought the intervention of a friend and fellow private who had a personal relationship with a non-commissioned officer in her chain of command.

Without Dresch's permission, this friend told their non-commissioned officer that Dresch was a lesbian.

The non-commissioned officer then asked Dresch if she was a lesbian. In response to this direct question, Dresch admitted that she was.

Dresch was honorably discharged from the Army on September 6, 2002. At the time of her discharge, she had served in the Army for just over one year. During her service, she earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, and had attained the rank of Private Second Class (E-2) with a Military Police specialty.
