Frederick Steckler
Fred Steckler joined the Board of SLDN in May 2009. He received his commission in the United States Navy in 1983 from the Duke University NROTC Program, where he served as Battalion Commander his senior year. Fred was a member of the commissioning crew of the USS Vandegrift (FFG-48) and served as Communications Officer, Electronic Repair Officer and Combat Information Center Officer. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant and went on to the U.S. Naval Academy as the Second Company Officer and then the Executive Assistant to the Commandant of Midshipmen. He was forced to leave the Navy in 1989 as a result of the policy banning gay service members.
Today, Fred is an Executive Advisor for Booz Allen Hamilton in the Organization and Human Capital Solutions Practice. Prior to Booz Allen, Fred worked in the Government Consulting Services Practice of Watson Wyatt Worldwide after serving as the General Deputy Assistant Secretary for Administration and Deputy Chief Information Officer for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. In addition to his prior experience at HUD, Fred held positions as the National Recruiting Executive for the business consulting unit of IBM, the Director of Strategy for Coopers & Lybrand's Tax Line of Business, and the Executive Director of Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry (NOVAM). His career also includes management consulting experience with both IBM and Coopers & Lybrand for private and public sector clients in the areas of project management, system implementation, process improvement and reengineering, strategic planning, organizational assessment, and change management. He has a BA in Economics from Duke University and an MBA from The George Washington University.
Fred lives in Washington DC with his partner, Robert Murphy, and their dog Diva.
