CAPT Dan Carucci, MD, PhD, USN (Ret.)

SLDN Council - Daniel CarucciCaptain Daniel Carucci completed his undergraduate degree at Washington and Lee University in Lexington Virginia. He entered the US Navy’s Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) while attending the University of Virginia School of Medicine and received his Doctorate of Medicine and Navy commission. He completed Internal Medicine training at Naval Hospital San Diego and after a brief tour as a General Medical Officer at NAS North Island enrolled in Flight Surgery school at Pensacola. He was designated a Naval Flight Surgeon and took an operational assignment with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at MCAS El Toro.

After two tours with the Marines, he attended the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and received a Masters degree in clinical tropical medicine and a Ph.D. in molecular biology.

He was assigned as a Research Medical Officer at the Malaria Program at the Naval Medicine Research Institute where he was instrumental in completing the genome of the malaria parasite. He was selected a Director of the Malaria Program, Naval Medical Research Center and led the US Navy efforts in the development of malaria vaccines.

He has published over 50 articles and book chapters in Science, Nature, Nature Medicine and others. His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with gold star (in lieu of second award), Navy Commendation Medal and Navy Achievement Medal.

He was the recent recipient of the prestigious American Medical Association Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service, the recipient of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Award for Excellence in Military Medicine and was awarded the Operational Flight Surgeon of the Year Richard E. Luehrs Memorial Award.

He retired from 20 years of active service in the US Navy in June 2004.
